Sporting accidents are one of the most common causes of dental injury. Only 36% of children aged 5 – 17 wear a mouthguard during games and 19 % wear one during training.
Why do you need a mouthguard?
Damaged or knocked out teeth, broken jaws and cut lips can be sustained when playing sport. These sports include netball, basketball, soccer, karate and boxing. It is mandatory to wear a mouthguard while participating in sports like rugby and hockey.
Choosing a mouthguard
There are many types of mouthguards available in Australia, ranging from cheap, over – the counter types to professionally custom – fitted mouthguards. Over – the – counter mouthguards are far less effective than those that are custom fitted. These mouthguards include stock mouthguards that do not require fitting and “boil and bite” mouthguards that can be placed in hot water and then self – fitted by biting into the mold.
Custom fitted mouthguards can prevent costly and pain full injuries to teeth as well as reduce the rate of concussion and jaw injuries. Off the rack, boil – and – bite mouthguards only provide low level protection and can make speaking and breathing difficult.
Custom – made mouthguards fitted in our clinic are more comfortable, safer and more effective.
